Marco Massaciuccoli oasis is one of the most beautiful natural reserve in Italy. It is located in the north of Tuscany between Lucca and Viareggio. Close to the beaches and the mountains. We are in Tuscany, Versilia. This place is extremely close to the famous beaches and marble caves of Alpi Apuane. The lake is 47ha and there are many different kind of environment in it: reeds, lagoons, pools for fishes…
Traditionally in the past there was a unique way to phish on this lake. People used Trabucco, is a traditional wooden building on stilts and with a web they can catch fishes. You can read more about it on this page.
How to go there
It’s easy to find the oasis, you will see many signs around the area. By car you can use the highway the exit is close to the lake (Marina di Torre del Lago), here you can see the map. The main entrance is located where the LIPU headquarter is, click here to see the map. there is a parking and from here you can take a boat for tours of the lake. By bus you can use the line E32 Pisa-Livorno and stop at the village Massaciuccoli. Here you can have all the informations about the timetable:www.lucca.cttnord.it
By train there is the line Firenze-Lucca-Viareggio, stop at the station of Bozzano or Viareggio, than take the local bus;
Walking on the water
The most amazing thing is to walk on the water with the wooden pathways, take your time, go slow and enjoy the nature around you. Every hour is different, every season has a huge variety of animals who live on the lake. You can stop at the observatory point, a wooden shelters where you can watch the nature without to be seen. This is perfect for bird watching.
